Today we鈥檙e going to talk about how to replace the tubing in our standard normally-closed pinch valve. Most of our <a href="/products/isolation-valves">pinch valves</a> come pre-installed with one foot of tubing. The tubing is rated to one million cycles. Our solenoid valves are rated for several million cycles. It is easy and simple to change the tubing in a pinch valve, but you do have to follow certain steps.</p> <p style="text-align:left; font-size:14px; line-height:21px; width:475px; padding-bottom:10px; padding-left:50px;">This is a standard 24 volt valve. Step one, the valve is not energized. You would energize it at the full rated voltage. The valve turns on, you remove the tubing. Move the tubing to a different spot, taking care not to stretch the tubing as that will deform the tubing. I began in a family machine shop at age 12 and continued through high school, learning to manufacture components that were used to manufacture miniature solenoid valves. This taught me a great deal about machining very tight tolerance parts.</p> <p style="text-align:left; font-size:14px; line-height:21px; width:500px; padding-bottom:20px; padding-left:75px;">After high school, I enlisted in the United States Marine Corps where I repaired heavy equipment and developed a quality control system. When my time in the military was over, I returned to the manufacturing industry where I ended up at a valve company鈥攆irst machining components, then assembly, and finally setting up a quality control department at Biochem, a solenoid valve company. From there, I went on to become Production Manager at Neptune Research, a pinch and isolation valve company. I spent more than 20 years there managing all aspects of their miniature pinch and isolation valve lines, including manufacturing, design, marketing and sales.</p> <!--Q--> <p style="text-align:left; font-size:14px; font-weight:bold; line-height:21px; width:475px; padding-bottom:0px; padding-left:50px;">What part of your job do you find most satisfying and/or what do you like about working in this industry?</p> <!--A--> <p style="text-align:left; font-size:14px; line-height:21px; width:500px; padding-bottom:20px; padding-left:75px;">The most satisfying part is developing a product that could potentially save lives. I enjoy the travel, working with customers and other companies to custom design products specific to their needs. The challenge of developing new products and resolving issues with existing ones is very satisfying. Also, being able to share my machining knowledge on the manufacturing side makes new processes easier. It鈥檚 exciting for us to see this line get added to markets that we were already established in鈥攊t鈥檚 a really nice addition for us.鈥</p> <p style="text-align:left; font-size:14px; line-height:21px; width:475px; padding-bottom:10px; padding-left:50px;"><a href="http://www.clippard.com/products/isolation-valves-ptfe">星城web鈥檚 isolation valves</a>, Rob said, should be fully in production in mid-March. He said that there are no seals in the valves 鈥 鈥淚t鈥檚 PTFE on PTFE. From an engineering prospective, having that geometry and that design came down to where it鈥檚 a leak-proof, water-tight product.</p> <p style="text-align:left; font-size:14px; line-height:21px; width:475px; padding-bottom:10px; padding-left:50px;">When engineers express their current needs, it has not simply been about price or delivery, Rob said鈥攕ervice is another key attribute.</p> <p style="text-align:left; font-size:14px; line-height:21px; width:475px; padding-bottom:10px; padding-left:50px;">鈥淲e鈥檙e known for good craftsmanship, design, the engineering side of things. The design of [these valves] certainly is unique in terms of, we can outperform our competition 鈥 but the thing that鈥檚 getting the attention is people love dealing with 星城web. We鈥檙e an easy company to work with as far as the service, the delivery, the pricing even. It鈥檚 certainly not a commodity by any means, but the price, the delivery service, we tend to do better than anybody in our industry.鈥</p> <p style="text-align:left; font-size:14px; line-height:21px; width:475px; padding-bottom:10px; padding-left:50px;">He said that they are expecting the second half of 2016 to be much stronger than the first half, especially on the industrial side of the business. For the life sciences, things started off stronger than they predicted, and the company expects industrial to catch up soon.</p> <p style="text-align:left; font-size:14px; line-height:21px; width:475px; padding-bottom:10px; padding-left:50px;">鈥淚t鈥檚 exciting for us because now we do expect that the second quarter will be far better,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 believe the year will probably see a 5 to 6% increase [in growth]. We could hopefully be closer to 10%, with the way things are going right now.鈥</p> <p style="text-align:left; font-size:14px; line-height:21px; width:475px; padding-bottom:10px; padding-left:50px;">Rob said that the company is working with three new large OEMs in the mobile market, which gives him a good feeling for 2016.</p> <p style="text-align:left; font-size:14px; line-height:21px; width:475px; padding-bottom:10px; padding-left:50px;">鈥淏etween life sciences and industrial, we think the first half will be strong on the life science, second half will be strong in industry,鈥 he said. 鈥淥verall, it鈥檚 a great place to be.
